SUNY Buffalo

The State University of New York University at Buffalo, or SUNY Buffalo, offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) that can be completed on-campus or online. Traditional MSW students may pursue the degree under full- or part-time study. An accelerated Advanced Standing program is open to students with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline who meet social work course prerequisites. The Social Work Department’s online MSW option is a part-time program that allows candidates scheduling flexibility. All program options include on-site supervised field placements as well as options for personalizing coursework according to students’ personal practice interests. MSW students may also pursue dual degree programs to earn an MSW/PhD in Social Work, MBA/MSW, or MPH/MSW. The MSW program at SUNY Buffalo is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Fordham University

Fordham University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program offers options for traditional campus-based study, hybrid study that combines on-campus and online classes, or fully online degree completion. Students at the Graduate School of Social Service may choose from concentration areas including Clinical, Leadership & Macro Practice, and Substance Abuse. The Research Concentration, which is designed to prepare students for PhD programs and is the only master’s level social work research program in New York, is available for on-campus students. Four minors are available, and students may also elect to pursue a second, interdepartmental master’s degree through one of the nine other schools at Columbia. Full-time study is the norm for this MSSW, although two programs, Reduced Residency and Extended, may allow students additional flexibility with part-time course loads. The Columbia University School of Social Work has been active in its field for over 100 years and is internationally recognized as a thought leader in research and education. The school also offers a PhD in social work.

Student Review: “I attended the College of Saint Rose and earned a BSW. The social work program was very small, less than 12 students in the core classes. There were only 2 or 3 professors teaching the core classes. This intimate experience led to an experience that was tailored by those in the curriculum. With this type of setting the students were able to form trusting relationships. This enabled us to be more creative and willing to take risks as we knew we were in a safe learning environment. The social work staff helped find meaningful internships based on each student’s interests. The students were able to develop personal yet professional relationships with the students. I am sure I would not have had the same excellent experience at a larger institution.” – Student at College of Saint Rose

Student Review: “I attended Fordham’s MSW social work program from 2010-2012. Fordham’s program is unique in that while it’s very clinical like NYU’s (for those who want to do clinical social work and become psychotherapists), it also places a big emphasis on human rights and social justice. The curriculum and professors had an excellent balance of teaching us all of the traditional clinical knowledge, beginning from Freud, while also not neglecting the great work of Jane Addams and educating ourselves on the unique perspective social work brings. The school’s training fieldwork is broad and comprehensive–my first year was spent learning case management social work in a nursing home and my second year internship was in a community mental health clinic. My professors were some of the most amazing clinicians I met and will supportively mold your experience. My only one criticism is the price. Social workers, to be honest, don’t start out with the greatest of salaries. I think universities should hold that into consideration when thinking about the return of investment of social work programs when compared to future salaries, and the necessity of retaining/recruiting people to the field.” – Student at Fordham University
