Schools in Ohio with Social Work Degree Programs

BSW and Other Undergraduate Programs

Ohio State University

Ohio State University is a public institution located in Columbus and was founded in 1870. It was ranked #16 among public national universities by US News & World Report in 2016. The OSU College of Social work offers a CSWE-accredited Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) that teaches students generalist case management, advocacy, and intervention skills. Graduates are prepared to work in children and family services, mental health services, criminal justice, and elderly services, among many other practice areas. Students can tailor their education plans by choosing the Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program, the international social work concentration, or the minor in substance misuse and addiction. The BSSW honors program allows candidates to complete a research project and undergraduate thesis as part of the curriculum. All students complete 420 hours of supervised field education in placements throughout the state. The university also offers master’s and doctoral social work degrees.

University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati offers a CSWE-accredited four-year BSW program that includes a broad liberal arts foundation in the first two years of study, followed by two further years of concentrated social work study. The University of Cincinnati School of Social Work’s (SSW) program curriculum prepares students for generalist social work practice with individuals, families, or communities as well as graduate social work study. There are also additional certifications available to specialize the degree such as the Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program and the Certificate in Service Learning in Spanish for Social Workers and Health Care Service. The BSW curriculum includes a year-long field placement in the final year of the program, with placements coordinated with over 200 social service agencies in the Cincinnati area in many different areas of practice. Research is also an important part of the curriculum. Students learn about social work research methods and then complete their own research project. The university offers an MSW degree as well. In 2016, the University of Cincinnati was ranked #140 among national universities by US News & World Report.

MSW and Other Graduate Programs

Ohio University

Ohio University offers a CSWE-accredited Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) program that can be completed at its campuses in Athens, Chillicothe, Ironton, Lancaster, St. Clairsville, and Zanesville. The school has a rural social work specialization and specifically prepares students for advanced generalist practice with individuals, families, and communities in rural areas. The program’s focus is on clinical social work skills complemented by coursework in macro practice. The university offers components of the degree online, but students must be available to attend courses on campus at least one day per week. With advanced standing based on a recently conferred BSW degree, the program can be completed in as little as one year. Candidates who are not eligible for advanced standing may complete the program with two years of full-time study or three to four years of part-time study. All students must begin the program in the fall semester. Completing a graduate thesis is not required, but is optional for research-oriented students. Ohio University was ranked within the top 100 social work graduate schools in the country by US News & World Report in 2016.

Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University offers a CSWE-accredited Master of Science in Social Administration (MSSA) degree in Cleveland and is ranked #9 among social work graduate schools across the country by US News & World Report. Students in the Mandel School of Social Work and Nonprofit Management Education for Leaders can complete the degree under traditional full-time study, part-time study, or intensive weekend classes, depending on the chosen specialization. Students can choose a macro concentration in Community Practice for Social Change or micro concentrations in Aging, Alcohol, and Other Drug Abuse; Children, Youth, and Families; Health; Mental Health (Children and Adolescents); or Mental Health (Adults). Advanced standing admission, which lessens the overall course requirements of the program, is available to individuals with a CSWE-accredited BSW degree earned in the past seven years. Dual degrees in law, business, nonprofit management, bioethics, or public health are also offered. For students interested in completing their master’s degree online, Case Western Reserve University maintains a CSWE-accredited online MSSA degree with specializations in Community Practice for Social Change; Children, Youth, and Families; or Mental Health with Adults.

Student Review: “The courses that I took at Bowling Green State University that prepared me for a career in Social Work highlighted cultural sensitivity and diversity. These themes are essential for a social worker to understand in order to effectively work with a wide variety of people of all cultures, races, and ages. Hands-on activities were provided by the university that simulated real-world situations, such as domestic disturbances. In the classroom, modern sophisticated technology helped expedite the learning process. Additionally, BGSU offers many intern/volunteer programs to help psychology students broaden their experience. I had the opportunity to work with ‘Good Grief’ counseling that helped me interact and communicate with both parents and children.” – Student at Bowling Green State University

Student Review: “Malone University’s social work program was a great experience. I felt that I was challenged enough to learn well. Professors were always available to give guidance and assist in anything we were having difficulty with. I don’t, however, believe that I was equipped with the right kind of skills to go out and just “do social work”. Frequently the professors would tell us, no matter what job you get, you’ll always be trained in how to do your job. Not so. My first social work job I shadowed a tiny bit but was never really trained on what I was expected to do. The social work program at Malone University didn’t prepare me well for this. In hindsight I probably should have chosen a different major, not because of the program but because of my own personality. I still think I learned so much in the social work program and my professors were some of the most intelligent and kind people I’ve ever met.” – Student at Malone University
